Noelia Gomez Accident: Noelia Gomez, 18, of Clark, New Jersey, has been identified by police as the University of Delaware student who was killed by a speeding motorcycle.
Eight hours before she passed away, Gomez had just begun her first semester in college. Her LinkedIn profile stated that she was a UD student studying business management and accounting.
In a message to students, UD President Dennis Assanis stated, “Scenes like these are unimaginably tragic.” “The tragic loss of one of our own has left us all incredibly rattled, and we cannot say enough how sorry we are for the family, friends, and larger community. Today, our hearts feel incredibly heavy.
According to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesperson for the Newark Police Department, the incident occurred at 11:53 p.m. on Tuesday after an officer from the University of Delaware Police Department attempted to stop a motorbike that resembled a sportbike for a traffic infraction close to Main Street and South Chapel Street.
“The motorcycle rode off westward on East Main Street at a high speed, ignoring the police officer’s emergency lights,” according to Rubin. “When the motorcycle took off at a high speed, the University of Delaware police officer put out his emergency lights and did not pursue the vehicle.”
Gomez was hit by the motorcycle while he was crossing the street in front of the Trabant University Center. According to Rubin, the rider lost control of the motorcycle and it crashed into four people walking on the sidewalk as well as a light pole.
Gomez reportedly passed away at the scene despite witnesses’ best efforts to save her life.
Out of the four individuals on the sidewalk, only one required hospitalization due to minor injuries. Also admitted to the hospital were the motorcycle rider’s non-life-threatening wounds.
The collision is still being looked into, but no charges have been made. If you have any information on this event, please get in touch with Master Cpl. Wayne Aston at waston@newark.de.us or 302-366-7100, ext. 3414.
Another Newark Police spokesman, Sgt. Joseph Conover, clarified that charges in traffic situations frequently take time to resolve. Prior to initiating any arrests, the attorney general’s office will confer with the police department.
Students impacted by the crash will have access to counseling services provided by UD.
