Tributes

The UH CWRU Department of Medicine University Hospitals family is shocked and in mourning at the news that our chair of medicine Dr. Robert Salata passed away suddenly yesterday.

To state that Dr. Salata was a giant of medicine would be an understatement. Suffice it to say that his impact on improving the lives of persons living with communicable diseases will be felt on many continents for decades. I never saw as much excitement and enthusiasm in his tone as when he was speaking about the work he was spearheading in Uganda and other parts of sub saharan Africa.

In close to 20 years of having Bob as a colleague including almost half as my chair, he was unfailingly kind and supportive. I never heard him speak ill or lose his temper despite intense challenges. His poise and even keel were best demonstrated during the COVID pandemic when he led the UH response which garnered national praise.

While I am deeply saddened by the loss of a great physician and a genuinely kind human being, my sadness is greatly magnified for those who were his family, loved ones, friends and close collaborators including our colleagues in Infectious diseases. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. May you be granted the patience, comfort and wisdom to move forward and preserve his legacy. May Dr. Robert Salata’s memory be a blessing to all of us.
