Liam Newman Death: Taupo NZ, iFLY Brisbane Indoor Flight Instructor Passed Away In Queensland Skydiving Accident
Liam Newman, a 25-year-old resident of Taupo, New Zealand, has been identified as the man who tragically lost his life in a skydiving accident on Tuesday, August 28, 2024. The accident occurred near Goondiwindi, on the southern border of Queensland, Australia, when a landing went terribly wrong during a jump.
A Passion for Skydiving
Liam Newman was an experienced skydiver, having completed over 600 jumps since he began the sport in 2022. His love for skydiving was evident in his dedication and the joy he found in the sport. As an instructor at iFLY Brisbane Indoor Skydiving, Liam shared his passion with many, inspiring others with his enthusiasm and expertise.
A Promising Life Cut Short
Born in Taupo, New Zealand, Liam Newman was a beloved son, brother, teammate, and friend. He attended North Lakes State College and had established himself in Scarborough, north of Brisbane, where he was deeply cherished by the local community. Liam’s untimely death has left his family, friends, and colleagues in mourning, as they grapple with the loss of someone who was so full of life and potential.
The Tragic Accident
The fatal incident took place at around eight in the morning, during an organized event for experienced skydivers. According to the Australian Parachute Federation (APF), Liam’s parachute opened and functioned correctly, but a hard landing resulted in multiple serious injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel who were quickly on the scene, Liam did not survive. Four other skydivers who participated in the group jump landed safely.
The APF, alongside the Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit, is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. APF CEO Stephen Porter expressed deep sorrow over the incident and emphasized that a thorough investigation would be conducted to understand the cause and to improve safety measures for the future.
